THE MARRIAGE LAW
The Marriage Law (est. July 2021) is the new law imposed by the Ministry of Magic, which pairs together unmarried witches and wizards of a certain age. All magical people over the age of fifteen must sign the register, where a match will be made. When they leave Hogwarts, they must marry within five years and must intend to produce offspring after marriage. This is also the rule for civil partnerships (homosexual marriage), as there is a separate (voluntary) register for surrogate Mothers and men willing to be donors.
If a couple has not produced offspring within three years of marriage, they are referred to a healer at St Mungo's and offered fertility treatments.
If a person has already left Hogwarts, or is just unmarried (and within child-bearing age) then they must also sign the register. Men over the age of 50 are not legally obliged, but can opt for the matching service if they like.
So what happens if somebody breaks this law? Well, like with anything, they will be taken to the Wizengamot court to establish the reason why. Sentences can include tax increase, heavy fines or even spending months to years in Azkaban prison. Believe me - you wouldn't want to be one of those couples.
Everybody has some level of choice when it comes to finding their marriage partner. For example, they are allowed to allocate a preferred age range and gender. But apart from that - it's all down to luck of the draw! If you use the match making thread then be aware that there is some level of randomness to the decisions, and that's all part of the fun! But the admins do try to genuinely match people according to what they're like, and so on.
Please note that the match making thread isn't actually essential to reply to: if you have already decided a plot for your marriage partner then you are free to claim them as a couple or ask for them in a wanted ad. If you do have a wanted ad up for them, however, we need you to indicate that when posting in the couple claim.
But all of this will become clear when you get to that stage!
If you have any further questions or are unsure of anything to do with the marriage law, don't hesitate to get in touch by PM!
